International Business in Europe
July 7 - July 31, 2008

Loyola’s College of Business is offering a summer international business program in Europe.

Students have the opportunity to visit some of the most famous sites in the world, e.g., the Eiffel Tower , while learning about the development of the European Union, how business practices changed with the advent of the EU, and how European practices differ from those of the United States . They will also be introduced to how government and business interact in the European Union.

Students will interact with guest speakers from Europe's private and public sectors, visit international institutions and make company visits to U.S. and European corporations.. The program will begin with a week in Barcelona . The students will travel by train to Paris where they will receive lectures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and tour the National Assembly. The students will then take a train to Frankfurt where they receive lectures from economists at the Deutsche Bourse and the European Central Bank. In the fourth week they will be in Munich , visiting such corporations as BMW and Siemens. The exact itinerary will be determined in the spring, with variations of a day or two or possibly another city depending on current events.

The cost of $3,975 ($4,175 for graduate enrollment) includes tuition and fees for two courses (six credit hours), housing, company visits, some meals, and insurance. Deadline for $200 deposit is February 15, 2008. There is a late fee of $150. A university study abroad fee of $250 will be assessed through the Student Finance Office.

Objectives

The objectives of Loyola’s Summer International Business Program in Europe are to:

  • introduce you to Europe’s economic, political and cultural environment
  • increase your expertise on the diverse features of the European Union (EU)
  • present frameworks, tools and methods associated with
    • international business ethics and management
    • European business practices

Activities

As a participant you will:

  • receive credit for the program’s two business courses (offered in English)
  • listen to guest speakers from Europe’s public and private sectors
  • visit companies and meet with executives to gain insights about global business issues

Courses

Courses:

  • BA G493 The Economic History of the European Union with Dr.John Levendis. The course covers the evolution of economic and social life in Europe .  The course ends with an in depth examination of the issues involved in creating and maintaining the political, economic, and monetary union of the present day EU.
  • INTB G310 Law for International Business with Prof. Christopher Screen. This course discusses basic legal principles of engaging in business transactions subject to the law of foreign jurisdictions, as well as the processes and rules that apply to the solutions of international business problems.
  • *prerequisite: junior standing

Faculty

Dr. John Levendis received his BBA from Loyola University New Orleans and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa . He teaches economics and statistics, and offered History of the European Union in Europe in the summers of 2006 and 2007.

Prof. Christopher Screen received his B.A. from Loyola University New Orleans and his J.D. from Tulane University . He practiced law in New Orleans for 31 years. From 2004 to 2006 he was an adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans and at Xavier University of Louisiana. Since 2006, he has been a Visiting Assistant Professor in the College of Business at Loyola University New Orleans, where he teaches Legal Environment of Business, Business Law and Law for International Business.

Schedule

The program will begin Monday, July 7, 2008, and end Thursday, July 31, 2008. Faculty-supervised field trips and company visits will be scheduled throughout the program. In addition, there will be three/four pre-departure classes.

Travel Arrangements

Students should plan to arrive in Europe on Sunday, July 6, 2008. Information pertaining to visa requirements, health insurance, and other necessary documents for international travel will be provided to the participant upon registration.

MBA Students

MBA students are welcome to participate in this program. In addition to the regular course work, MBA students will receive supervised instruction in carrying out graduate-level projects. The projects will focus on the specific subject of each course and the student’s professional goals.

Program Costs

Price of the program: $3,975 (undergraduate), $4,175 (MBA), Includes

  • tuition and fees for six credit hours
  • accommodations in Barcelona, Paris, Frankfurt and Munich
  • class-related company visits
  • insurance

Not included in price:

  • airfare to Europe (New Orleans-Europe, approx. $1,200-$1,500 round-trip)
  • ground transportation
  • meals
  • any personal expenditures (laundry, telephone calls, etc.)

Registration

Complete the application form (Adobe PDF) and return, with $200 deposit (refundable if not accepted into the program) to the College of Business Dean’s Office (301 Miller Hall) by February 15 , 2008. A registration form and additional information will be provided to the student upon receipt of this application. The balance is due on March 15, 2008. There is a late fee of $150 for the deposit and for the balance. Also please complete the Summer Application Release.
